Cranial Helmet Treatment

Working Principle of Cranial Helmet Therapy

Cranial helmet therapy controls the pressure applied to the head to correct shape deformities in a baby’s skull. The spaces inside the helmet allow the skull bones to grow properly. Instead of applying equal pressure on all areas of the head, the helmet relieves pressure from the flattened regions and leaves room to support the growth of other parts. The outer surface of the helmet gently presses on the deformed area to help the head shape correctly.

Cranial Helmet Therapy Process

1. Examination and Assessment: First, the baby is examined by a pediatrician or pediatric neurologist. The head shape, skull measurements, and possible deformities are evaluated.
2. Adjustments and Molding: The helmet is custom designed according to the baby’s head measurements. This process may involve 3D scanning or casting techniques.
3. Helmet Application: The helmet is placed on the baby’s head and periodically adjusted as the head grows.
4. Monitoring and Follow-up: Helmet therapy typically lasts a few months and requires regular check-ups. Every 2–3 weeks, the spaces and pressure points inside the helmet are readjusted in accordance with the baby’s head development.

Usage of the Cranial Helmet

When Is It Worn?: Helmet therapy is usually applied between the ages of 3 and 18 months. During this period, the skull is still flexible, making shaping more effective.
Daily Usage: Babies typically wear the helmet about 23 hours a day. It should be worn continuously except during sleep and bathing.

Treatment Duration and Effectiveness

The duration of cranial helmet therapy generally ranges between 3 and 6 months. The earlier the head shape deformity is treated, the more effective the results. The helmet therapy helps the head shape become more regular and achieve a more symmetrical appearance.
